Baby chics can get sick if they ingest cedar shavings. Cedar as in solid wood has no effect on chickens. It actually is the best wood to use in a chicken coop because it resists rot and repels mites. Using any other wood will rot out quickly. Painted coops should be avoided because paint eventually flakes and is toxic to chickens. Cedar cost about five times as much as pine, but will last a lifetime if taken care of . I hope this answers your question.
Thanks,
Scott
